Ian Ailles Ian Ailles was the Director General of the House of Commons, House of Commons Commissioner and Chair of the Commons Executive Board. Expand Ian has worked in complex, customer facing organisations, in both the public and private sectors. He is a qualified accountant and has worked in a wide range of service industries in the UK and Overseas. The majority of his career has been in the travel and leisure industries, performing CEO, MD, COO and CFO roles with listed UK and US companies. Outside the travel industry he has held executive, non-executive and consultancy roles for charities, start-up ventures and large organisations in sectors including the NHS, education, care homes, IT and banking. He continues to hold a number of non executive roles. Ian holds the post as Treasurer at Haven House. Ian lives in Hertfordshire and is married with two daughters.
Matt Barrett Matt is a solicitor and notary public. He is a partner at Thirsk Winton LLP, with offices based in Woodford Green and Mayfair. Expand Whilst his professional background lends itself to assisting with legal and regulatory compliance at Haven House, his initial involvement with the hospice was in relation to fundraising and community engagement and that remains his passion. He was educated locally and works in Woodford Green. He currently lives in Loughton with his wife, a teaching assistant at a local primary school for which he sits on the governing body.
Rachel Brodie Rachel decided to become a trustee due to her personal connection to Haven House. Rachel’s son Isaac was born in 2016 with a mass on his brainstem that was sadly untreatable and incurable. Expand Rachel Brodie has recently joined our board. Rachel’s career has seen her work in educational publishing and for the last seven years in large-scale B2B exhibitions and conferences. Her current role is Portfolio Director, Education at Hyve Group. Rachel decided to become a trustee due to her personal connection to Haven House. Rachel’s son Isaac was born in 2016 with a mass on his brainstem that was sadly untreatable and incurable. Rachel and her husband Steven spent Isaac’s precious final days together at Haven House. Rachel hopes that her personal experience with our hospice will enable her to share helpful insights into the future development of the support services we offer to carers. Rachel will also be a familiar face around the hospice meeting regularly with families at our coffee mornings. “I became a trustee because I am passionate about community engagement and because Haven House holds a special place in my heart. I am keen to support the wonderful Haven House team as they continue to grow, develop and shape the future of care. The care that we received from Haven House throughout Isaac's short life was absolutely wonderful, and it's hard to put into words just how much of a difference this made to us, transforming an absolutely impossible time into something bearable and, at times, truly incredible. We were able to spend Isaac's last hours in private together, holding him close, singing to him, praying for him and making sure he knew he was loved and cherished more than anything. I hope my personal experience, together with my professional experience, means I can be a supporter, advisor, challenger and advocate for the hospice and contribute to its future success.”
Frances Daley Frances is a Chartered Accountant with experience in corporate finance and as a Finance Director. Expand Frances qualified as a Chartered Accountant with EY and spent nine years in Corporate Finance followed by 18 years in various finance director and consulting roles. From 2007 to 2012 she was Group Finance Director of the Lifeways Group, the UK’s largest provider of specialist support to adults with learning disabilities and mental health needs under contract to local authorities and PCTs, and on the board of three investment trusts quoted on the Stock Exchange. As well as management and strategic planning skills she brings experience of regulated organisations and those where quality and reputation is paramount. Frances was born in Loughton, is married with two adult children and is a keen amateur musician.
Emma Devereux Emma qualified as a Doctor in 1992 and began working in paediatrics in 1994, training in Essex and East London. Expand In 2002 she began practising as a Consultant Paediatrician at the North Middlesex University NHS Hospital, caring for both acutely unwell children and neonates and those with long term chronic conditions. In 2010 she became the Clinical Director responsible for Maternity, Neonatal, Paediatric, and Gynaecology Services. She also sees children at Holly House Private Hospital.As a paediatrician caring for children with chronic conditions, she values the care that Haven House can provide to children and families, and has professional experience of this. She hopes that this expertise will be of value as a Trustee.She lives locally in Woodford Green with her husband.

Jonathan Harding Jon is a Managing Director at Standard Chartered Bank, where he heads Emerging Markets Institutional Rates Sales in the Financial Markets division. Expand He has held numerous Sales and Trading management roles over a career that spans more than 20 years and has previously worked at Nomura International, RBS, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse First Boston. Jon currently chairs the Income Generation and Marketing Committee and brings with him a strong financial background and City contacts. Originally from North West England, Jon has lived locally since he graduated and has three children. He is a keen cyclist.
Sir Iain Duncan Smith Patron Expand Rt. Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP is the Member of Parliament for Chingford and Woodford. A former leader of the Conservative Party, he established the Centre for Social Justice, an independent think tank committed to tackling poverty and social breakdown. After the 2010 election Iain was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.He provides the hospice with regular and invaluable support including hosting supporter lunches at the House of Commons.Iain was knighted for services to politics and charities in 2020
Complementary Therapists We need complementary therapists to offer their services to the children and parents we care for. Expand Our complementary therapy service is led by volunteers that are trained and experienced in their field. They offer support on our premises to parents of children who are receiving care at Haven House. Haven House will ensure that therapies are offered to families and that this is promoted within the community. The reception team will book all appointments for the therapists. The role is flexible so therapists may choose to work once a week or once a fortnight. Mohamed Omer Mohamed has been actively involved with community work in East London for the last 15 years. Expand Mohamed is a Finance Director for the software solutions company Intellicomms Solutions Ltd. He is also a consultant for Hysen International, a company providing banking solutions in West Africa. He is currently involved with various charities including as a board member of External Affairs for the Gardens of Peace Muslim Cemetery. Based in Hainault, Essex, this is the largest dedicated Muslim Cemetery in Europe with a capacity for 10,000 graves and burials in accordance with Islamic Shariah. He is a trustee of The Social Enterprise Loan Fund – an organisation funding Social Enterprises that are not able to obtain funding from banks. He is also a Muslim representative on the Burial Cremation and Advisory Group at the Ministry of Justice. Mohamed has been actively involved with community work in East London for the last 15 years and has been the Vice Chair of Oaks Park High School in Ilford for the last 14 years.
Barry Hearn Patron Expand Barry Hearn was born in Dagenham and educated in Buckhurst Hill. Barry is a sporting events promoter and the founder and chairman of promotions company Matchroom Sport.Haven House has been the chosen charity for both World Snooker and Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), thanks to Barry’s role as Chairman of both organisations. In addition he has secured a raft of sportspeople and auction prizes to assist our fundraising efforts. Speaking about becoming a Haven House Patron, Barry said: ‘I’ve really got to know the staff at Haven House over the years and have seen for myself the great work that the hospice does for children and families in the local community.’Married to Susan with two children, Barry lists his sporting interests as poker, fishing, running and golf.
Retail volunteers Volunteering in one of our shops (Chingford, North Chingford, Loughton, Epping, Leytonstone, Crouch End and Romford) can be rewarding and a very interesting fun way of volunteering. Expand Shop volunteers help with all aspects of the day today running of the shop so you could be asked to help out with any of the following activities; Serving customers at the till point Sorting through donations Cleaning bric-a-brac Pricing and hanging clothes Helping with shop displays We are also seeking an Online Retail Volunteer to help with selling items on our eBay shop. You will need to understand the general principles of selling online and help with sorting donations, researching to identify an item’s worth and postage and packaging. This role would be based in Romford. Haven House relies on having a team of volunteers to help the Manager run the shop on a regular basis. Income Generation and Marketing Committee Members We are seeking proactive individuals with a business background to join the Income Generation & Marketing (IGM) Committee to help steer and further develop its annual programme of fundraising activities. Expand Haven House relies on the generosity of its business partners and individual donors to fund our £4.4m hospice services. Without this support we could not help the 300 children and families that use our services each year. As we plan to increase our voluntary income over the next five years to support more children and families in the face of likely reduced Government funding, we are looking for individuals with business skills who can support our ambitious fundraising plans. Our Committee Members play a key role in supporting the IGM team across all fundraising areas including events, major gifts, corporate partnerships and retail. They provide guidance and advice in areas of their own professional expertise and are happy to bring their networks to the table. Suitable candidates will be interested in supporting any of the following areas of activity: High-level events such as balls, gala dinners or networking events Company giving schemes or experience of making connections between charitable activities and business Retail development Legal, in particular conveyancing, commercial negotiations and/or legacies Business development. Candidates should also enjoy working collaboratively and in partnership with a dedicated fundraising team to support them to test and pilot new fundraising schemes. Committee members would be expected to: Attend committee meetings (4-6 times a year) Attend Haven House events, with a particular focus on our high-level, special events programme Promote events and activities within their personal and/or professional network Use their professional experience to help Haven House to further develop its voluntary income. Volunteer gardeners Are you an outdoors person who enjoys working in beautiful surroundings? Ghislaine Stephenson Ghislaine has worked within the NHS as a registered adult and child nurse for her whole career spanning over 30 years. Expand Ghislaine remains passionate about caring for patients and their families and ensuring the delivery of high quality safe care. She has held senior nurse leadership posts in hospitals in North London since 2004. Ghislaine currently works as the Associate Director of Nursing for Children and Young People at Whipps Cross. She works professionally with the Team at Haven House for children and their families with life-limiting and life threatening conditions and values the care they deliver. She hopes her professional experience will be of value to the Trustees.
Vicki Michelle MBE Patron Expand Vicki Michelle MBE is best known as the iconic Yvette in nine seasons of the BBC series 'Allo 'Allo. Vicki has had an extensive acting career in TV, films and the theatre and is a star of the pantomime circuit. She is President of the Lady Taverners - Essex Branch and is an active and committed charity worker. Vicki first became a patron of Haven House when her young nephew was a visitor to the Hospice.
