Mike started working life in the banking industry, before escaping to the voluntary sector. Starting at the RNIB, he cut his teeth in local fundraising before heading up a Capital Appeal. Following 5 years at the Princess Royal Trust for Carers (now Carers Trust) as Director of Fundraising, Mike became Chief Executive of Age Concern Havering, his home borough, which has the highest elderly population in London.

Following family experience of receiving hospice care, Mike became interested in the hospice world, working for a year as Interim Director of Fundraising at Hospice UK before achieving ‘his best job ever’ as Chief Executive of Haven House in 2011.

Mike is the representative for all children’s hospices on the Advisory Council of Hospice UK, the national umbrella body for all adult and children’s hospices in the UK.

Hospices run deep in the Palfreman family with Mike’s wife working in the hospice field and his daughter volunteering at the Haven House charity shop in Leytonstone. Leading from the front, Mike has completed a number of challenge events for Haven House including Ride London and the 100km Thames Path Walk.
