When COVID-19 hit, it changed everything for our families. We had to respond quickly by adapting how we care. The demand for the outstanding care Haven House provides is increasing and more vital than ever. We need you to help us deliver our care to families who so desperately need us during the most difficult of times.

Our Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) are privileged to spend precious time with babies, children young people and their families within their homes. We are looking to appoint someone who will provide compassionate care and help families create special memories.

As a valued member of the Community and Wellbeing team, you will join a unique and vibrant team providing symptom management, palliative and end-of-life care, as well as planned and emergency short breaks in the community.  As a Haven House HCSW you will support the wider team to ensure high standards of holistic care are delivered.

In return, we will support your wellbeing and offer you a learning environment to develop your skills and competencies in paediatric palliative care, supported by our Nurse Practice Educator.

This role is based at our beautiful woodland hospice in Woodford Green, offering free parking and easy access from the Central line.

“I’ve been working as Health Care Support Worker within the Hospice at home team at Haven House, Children’s Hospice since late 2019.

Every day is different; a lot of my time is spent offering specialist respite care to families in the community within the family home setting. 

The respite care that Haven House offers is so important, in most cases the children/young people have life-limiting conditions and/or a variety of complex medical needs.

Parents and carers are often the only ones able to look after their child, so a break from the round the clock responsibilities is incredibly welcome. The community HCSW role primarily involves meeting the day to day needs of the individual child/young person (personal care, feeding, providing holistic care and play). During the respite visit, I can care for the child/ young person whilst the family choose how they wish to use their respite time, this may be taking a break or rest or spending time with their other family members.  I can form really close relationships with the children and their families.

It’s hard to see families go through tough times, but it’s also a real privilege to support them through those difficult times. I am very fortunate to be able to do a job I love and makes a difference.”
