Our Expert Parent programme is an education programme for parents and carers designed to empower them and give them the confidence to manage their child's conditions. It also aims to encourage families to find ways to work more collaboratively and effectively with health and social care experts.

Past Expert Parent training sessions for parents have covered a broad range of topics including aspects of clinical care, legislation in the field of caring for children with disabilities, behaviour management, epilepsy and resilience.

Parents who have attended sessions report feeling better equipped and having greater confidence in their ability to manage their child's care. They also feel more confident in dealing with professionals and therefore more empowered to take an active role in the planning and delivery of their child's care.

National guidance and accepted good practice inform the content of any Expert Parent training programme. We work with children’s hospitals and other experts from our local communities when planning suitable training programmes, commissioning and consulting with staff with up to date expert knowledge in their field.

Running the sessions for small groups within comfortable surroundings facilitated by expert speakers enables families to feel relaxed and comfortable to ask questions and discuss queries on an informal basis, and gain support through the sharing of experiences.
