This Sunday (8th March) saw more than 50 Haven House supporters abseiling the ArcelorMittal Orbit in Stratford’s Olympic Park to raise much-needed funds for Haven House.

The daring fundraisers tackled the UK’s tallest sculpture (114 metres high), giving them a birds-eye view of the London Skyline and helping to raise £17,000 for the charity.

Stephen Field from Darnley Road in Woodford, did the climb in memory of his daughter Molly, who died in 2010 aged eight, having used the hospice’s services. Stephen, along with his wife Mel and daughter Isabella has raised almost £90,000 for Haven House in recent years.

He explains; ‘I’ve been heavily involved in fundraising for Haven House with my family, since we lost our beautiful Molly 4 years ago, but have never instigated an event myself. This was my first solo fundraiser and it was such an exhilarating feeling, scaling this amazing structure and knowing that I was raising funds in Molly’s memory.’

A number of Haven House staff also took part in the abseil, including the organisation’s Director of Fundraising, Jenni Anderson.

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of the Woodford Green charity added; ‘It was great to see so many of our supporters and staff climbing this iconic local landmark – what a brave bunch they are. A special mention must also go to Steve and the Field family for their ongoing support and ever more inventive fundraising events.’
