Haven House Children’s Hospice has been praised in a recent inspection for delivering care with “compassion and warmth” and for responding to the needs of families.

The hospice in Woodford Green, which supports families in North and North East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire, was visited by inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) at the end of summer.

In a report published last week, inspectors praised Haven House’s senior management team for providing a safe, responsive, caring, effective and well-led environment for children and young people.

Haven House received an overall rating of “Good” by the CQC with staff said to be committed to delivering high quality care.

The report said: “Staff were knowledgeable about the children they were caring for and ensured the care maintained the child's privacy and dignity.

“Haven House were mindful of the different spiritual and cultural needs of people, and these could be accommodated during the provision of care and after a child's death”.

The CQC said the senior management team at Haven House provided “strong leadership” and that “staff and parents were positive about the role of senior managers and how they were open and approachable”.

Parents had high praise for Haven House with the report including positive feedback from families.

One parent said, "When I leave my daughter here, I feel she is in safe hands", and another added, "I feel he's really well looked after."

Staff were described as “lovely and understanding” by one parent who said their daughter “loves this place and doesn't want to come with us when it's time to go."

Parents were also positive about the steps taken by staff to actively listen to families, one said, "They listen to what you say, and they really do listen."

The CQC said Haven House was constantly looking at ways to improve its services and had introduced new parent forums and feedback surveys involving iPads.

Eileen White, Director of Care at Haven House, said: “We are really encouraged to see such a positive report from the CQC demonstrating that, at every level, we are a safe, responsive, caring, effective and well-led organisation.

“The report is a testament to the commitment and compassion of our care staff and we are delighted to see extensive praise from parents.

“By constantly listening to families and tailoring our services to match their needs we can continue to improve our delivery of care.”
