Hundreds of walkers brought colour and excitement to the streets of east London while taking part in Haven House’s Sparkle Walk 2022.

More than 300 people took part in the Sparkle Walk on Friday 2 September, which so far has raised a staggering £49,240 - with donations continuing to come in for the Woodford-Green based children's hospice.

Starting at Christchurch Green, Wanstead, eventgoers completed a 10km distance to the Cuckfield Pub, Wanstead and they really brought the party atmosphere to town.

Reiko Murray, Haven House’s Community and Events Manager, said:

“Oh what a fantastic night. Thank you to all who made the Sparkle Walk happen, from our sponsors Gates of Woodford, Daniel Frank Estates, our amazing volunteers, hospice staff and especially all the incredible walkers.

“Seeing a pink takeover of our local streets was something quite spectacular. It really was a fantastic event which really has captured the hearts of our community. We look forward to the next walk in May 2023 which will be in our 20th birthday year. Bring on the birthday sparkles!”

Seeing the walkers off were reality TV stars and hospice ambassadors Billie and Greg Shepherd. Greg "sparkled" in a fake baby bump, dressing as his pregnant wife for the walk, complete with wig, sunglasses and handbag.

The route encompassed parts of Epping Forest, South Woodford and Wanstead, with the halfway Sparkle Station on the grounds of Haven House. The walk offered supporters a chance to dress up and raise funds for the hospice through sponsorship, as well as an opportunity to remember loved ones.

Harvey’s Angels were walking in memory of Harvey Howe who died when he was 16 years old. The Sparkle Walk marked a special milestone for this group as Harvey would have been 21 this September. The ladies carried a picture of Harvey and balloons in celebration of the teenager. They really shone in their luminous tutus, bright pink hair and sparkles.

Mum Lorraine, 55, explained:

“Harvey’s wish was to be at home for his end-of-life care. This choice was made possible because of Haven House. I can’t thank Haven House enough for helping us to have Harvey at home for the last remaining five weeks of his life where we were able to have special times together. The outreach team were amazing and gave me the courage and confidence at such a devastating time to nurse my son. I’m forever grateful.

“For me, taking part tonight and fundraising is hoping other families can have the same choice as Harvey did. Haven House is such an invaluable cause. Until you need a hospice yourself you won’t realise just how important it is.”
