A team of 17 runners took part in the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 22 April and raised more than £33,000 for Haven House.

The runners braved soaring temperatures as they navigated 26.2 miles of gruelling roads through the capital, setting off from Greenwich Park after the Queen pressed the starting button.

Haven House volunteers cheered on the runners at Mile 16, boosted by the fantastic Natural Voices choir that sung uplifting tunes at the side of course.

Richard Wilson from Chingford was among those to take part for Haven House. His daughter, Jessica, 18, has been receiving treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and receives support from Haven House’s Teenage Cancer Group.

Richard, who has raised more than £2,200 for Haven House, said: “Running the marathon was very tough, but I’m so glad I did it!

“My daughter Jess is undergoing treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Every month she attends Haven House’s Teenage Cancer Group where she gets to meet other young people who are going through the same sort of challenges.

“Jess has been able to make friends in the group and take part in fun activities. She has even been able to meet X-Factor star Leona Lewis who took part in a song-writing workshop with the teenagers in February.

“We are so grateful for all of the incredible support from Haven House. This wonderful organisation with its lovely staff and volunteers requires a lot of funding to continue the tireless work they do.”

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Haven House, said: “Our marathon runners have raised an incredible amount for our children and their families. We are so grateful for all of their hard work and they definitely deserve a well-earned rest.”
